Eye on the Sound

The shoreline in the Woodmont section of Milford curves gracefully around Long Island Sound.

As it does, beach-side houses enjoy picturesque panoramas of the water from their decks or windows.

In the is contemporary, custom built in 1991 partly on a foundation of a house once on the property, several rooms, including the expansive master suite on the second level, take advantage of tranquil, sweeping views.

Sounds of waves lapping on the beach supplement the sights when the windows are open.

The scalloped shingles on the high front gable of the newly painted gray façade subtly reflect the beach-side theme.

This theme continues inside with the shade of ceramic tiles that runs through the entire first level.

The soft beach tones of the tiles bring shades of the outdoors to all of the open expanses, from the living room, on to the dining room and kitchen, and into the versatile rear guest bedroom/home office.

In the living room, tall windows line three sides, giving a ringside seat of the Sound.

The warm tones of the ceramic tile floor is complemented by the room's house granite fireplace that angles into and fills a rear corner.

When the sun sets, recessed lighting softly illuminates the entire room.

Wood pillars bring architectural accents to the open divide between the living room, dining room.

The ceiling in the dining rooms soars nearly three stories high. It brings the outdoors in with its airiness and with a wall of multi-sized windows.  The variation in their sizes makes for striking architectural accents.

The top row is rally a large half-round _ another theme throughout the house because the master bedroom has a trio of them.

At the back of the dining room, a stairway blends with the walls as it rises to the upper level where the open hallway looks out over the dining room below.

The kitchen would please any cook. It really begins with a breakfast/snack bar with Earth-toned granite countertop framed by posts. The seats are in the dining room but they face into the kitchen.

The kitchen features an abundance of stainless steel.  The triple sinks, the dual professional model Thermador wall ovens and the SubZero refrigerator/freezer are all faced in stainless steel.

Custom maple cabinetry is stained in Earth tones for a warm look.  The cabinets' finish blends well with the stainless steel, and at the same time gives the impression the house's roots go back father than 11 years.

The short hallway to the rear of the house accesses a guest bedroom. The room's location makes it very versatile. It can easily be a private den, a home office, a study, or TV room.

An atrium door in the room opens to a deck that steps down to a slate patio, which in turn accesses a garage.  A hot/cold shower for beachgoers, plus a sauna, extends from the garage.

The high-traffic access to the rear outdoor area is handled through the laundry room.  Also in this part of the house, there's a bath across from the bedroom and steps from the kitchen/dining areas.

Putty, white, and Earth tones are the primary colors in this bath.

Upstairs, the master bedroom, which features a high vaulted ceiling has unusual features.

The hardwood flooring which began in the upper hallway is set  on the diagonal and has a light "frosted" finish that complements the white decor.

Above, the unusual ceiling fan has a maritime look with its exposed gears and its paddles that look like sails.  The fixture recalls boating on the Sound.

The lines of windows have a good view of the Sound and shoreline, while the large half-rounded windows topping three sides pull in natural lighting.

For another perspective, the central atrium door facing the Sound opens to a small private beachside balcony.  Off to the side, the master bedroom has a second, larger, deck-sized balcony with decorative balusters.

The master bedroom also includes dual walk-in-closets and an expansive area above that's ready-made for displaying large collectibles or artifacts.

The master bath is s study in white ceramic tiling (with some very soft gray tile accents_ and decorative glass blocks.

Under its vaulted ceiling the dual skylights, a jetted tub sets in the tile surround.  Next to it is a steam shower. The Corian vanity top with beveled edging contains a large rectangular undermount sink.

The glass blacks are both decorative and practical, set as they are around the shower wall.

Two children's bedrooms ar the rear continue the whimsical, subtle saiing theme as reflected in their ceiling fans and window treatments.

Their identical fans have sailcloth paddles to make cooling breezes. Sailcloth window treatments roll up and down like the workings of a sleek boat.

White ladders fixed to the walls in both rooms lead to lofts – one with a skylight – for extra sleeping areas.

The rooms share a balcony-deck as well as full bath.
